My 89-year old auntie broke her hip last winter while
walking on a slippery pedestrian path. She has recovered very well, but after
all, she is 89 years old already. Before the accident she could manage her
daily routines quite well, and there was a home aid coming once a week. But now
after the accident she has had to use a rollator as a moving aid, and the daily
cooking, cleaning and laundry isn't so easy for anymore.
So she decided that it was time to move to a senior
home, or rather to a kind of assisted living home. She got an apartment from
this kind of community just last month and is planning the moving. This will be
a quite enormous task to carry out since she has lived in her home now for some
35 years. She will take some things with her to the assisted living home, but
sure she is not able to take it all, since the flat is a bit smaller. Basic
kitchen stuff, clothes and some furniture will be moved to the new apartment
but for the rest of the stuff we need to figure out something.
In the assisted living home she will get a meal thrice
a day in a common dining area. She will have a kitchen as well, but since the
accident she hasn't been interested in cooking that much. There will be daily
help for cleaning and cloth management and if she needs to go somewhere, the
transportation is provided. Every flat features a nurse call
system
and help is also available through phone around the clock. I think it was a
good decision for her to acquire a home from this kind of assisted living
community. There will be also lot of social interaction and activities, which
she sure enjoys. I doubt she would have been so happy in some senior care home.
